Why Are ACL Tears So Common in Sports? Understanding the Risks

December 17, 20243 min read

ACL tears are among the most frequent injuries in sports, sidelining athletes and active individuals alike. But why does this specific injury happen so often? Let’s explore the reasons behind its prevalence and how you can reduce your risk.

What Is the ACL?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key ligaments in your knee. It provides stability and helps control the knee’s movement, especially during activities that involve sudden stops, pivots, or changes in direction.

When the ACL is torn, it can lead to pain, swelling, and instability in the knee, making it difficult to continue with daily activities, let alone high-impact sports.

Why Are ACL Tears So Common in Sports?

  1. High-Impact Movements
Sports like football, basketball, soccer, and skiing involve frequent jumping, quick turns, and sudden stops. These movements place intense stress on the knee joint, increasing the risk of injury.

  2. Lack of Muscle Support
Weakness in the muscles surrounding the knee—like the quadriceps and hamstrings—can put extra strain on the ACL, making it more susceptible to tears.

  3. Improper Landing Techniques
Landing awkwardly after a jump is a common cause of ACL injuries. If the knee collapses inward or rotates unnaturally, the ACL can be overstretched or torn.

  4. Gender Differences
Research shows that ACL tears occur more frequently in female athletes due to differences in anatomy, hormonal influences, and movement patterns.

  5. Overtraining or Fatigue
Fatigue can reduce muscle control and coordination, leading to improper movements that strain the ACL. Overtraining without adequate rest also increases the likelihood of injury.

  6. Playing on Unstable Surfaces
Uneven or slippery surfaces can cause awkward movements and sudden knee twists, both of which are risk factors for ACL tears.

How to Reduce the Risk of ACL Tears

While ACL injuries can’t always be prevented, there are steps you can take to lower your chances:

  1. Strengthen Supporting Muscles
Exercises that target the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes help stabilise the knee and reduce stress on the ACL.

  2. Focus on Proper Technique
Learning the correct way to land, pivot, and stop during sports can significantly reduce knee strain.

  3. Incorporate Stretching and Warm-Ups
Proper warm-ups and stretches improve flexibility and prepare your body for intense movements.

  4. Use Supportive Footwear
Wearing appropriate shoes for your sport ensures better grip and reduces the risk of slipping or twisting your knee.

  5. Rest and Recover
Avoid overtraining by allowing your body enough time to recover between workouts or games. Fatigued muscles are more prone to injury.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in both preventing and recovering from ACL tears. Through targeted exercises, posture correction, and movement training, a physiotherapist can help strengthen your knees and reduce the risk of injury. If an ACL injury does occur, physiotherapy can also aid in restoring mobility, rebuilding strength, and guiding you through the rehabilitation process.
